I always forget how much I enjoy making mixed media art. Mixed media allows for your creativity to just flow. Whatever you make doesn't have to be amazing or even something you remember in a few years. I totally forgot I made this during the pandemic, and just found a photo of it today. All I remember now was the pleasure of sitting at the dining table making it.
I didn't spend the pandemic at home. Just before the quarantine hit, I'd gone to another state for spring break and ended up staying there for one and a half years. (And I only took a small carry-on case, too! Oh joy!)
Of course I should get new art supplies, I reasoned. I couldn't live there indefinitely without paints or paper — or even colored pencils. Who knew when I'd be back home again!?!?
Finding out that the art store in town delivered art supplies to customers living nearby was the best news I'd had in ages. I spent hours filling my basket and emptying it, the re-filling it. Had to stretch out the experience, no?
Ohhh the restraint!!
See? Just these things! Pastels, paper, brushes and some Holbein acrylics.
Any artist out there will know exactly what I mean when I say Holbein paints are just amazing! So creamy and deeply pigmented. They do NOT mess around!
Anyway - this was a quick thing, done with old magazines, Sennelier pastels and Holbein acrylic paint. Please appreciate how black the black really is. :)
Not sure how to start?
Start with a solid colour and a geometric shape. Lots can grow from there.

I always feel a li’l sense of peace when I read things like this. Like a reminder that, in the midst of chaos, there’s a quiet place. And we should go there.
